SMART Subsea Cables in the Iberian Peninsula
A major step forward for SMART Subsea Cables in the Iberian Peninsula!
On May 19, a key meeting at the Royal Observatory of Madrid brought together Spanish and Portuguese institutions, international organizations, and industry leaders to draft a national roadmap for Spain’s participation in the SMART Cables Network of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)
Co-organized by Unidad Tecnología Marina (UTM, CSIC) and Instituto Geográfico Nacional de España y O.A. CNIG, and supported by the ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC Joint Task Force on SMART Subsea Cables, this initiative is aligned with Portugal’s Atlantic CAM project — paving the way for joint SMART deployments in the Northeast Atlantic, Western Mediterranean and beyond.
An exciting example of science, telecom, and society working together to better observe and protect our ocean — while strengthening early warning systems for earthquakes and tsunamis. 🌍🌊
